At a time where the cost of living is rising beyond belief, supporting small businesses (in terms of purchasing from their stores) is not at the top of everyone’s priorities, or even in their capabilities.
This means that many small businesses and independent stores are struggling, particularly in comparison to the success many saw during the pandemic due to a shift in consumer mindset.
So, what can we do to support small businesses without having to spend a penny?

Follow them on their Social Medias – and Engage with their Content!
This may seem meaningless, but the algorithms do not favour small businesses and creatives, so we have to take matters into our own hands if we want to keep seeing and enjoying small business & creative content.
Follow them on social media, like and comment on their posts, share their posts – and turn on their post notifications or add them to your favourites on Instagram so you don’t miss their content. This is perhaps the most basic step you can take to show a small business or a creative your love and support.
Subscribe to their Newsletters or Mailing Lists
Not only will you stay up to date with their content and business journey, but you may be reminded to shop with them in the future when you can afford to do so, as they’ll likely be sending you all the latest news on sales, discounts, offers, events, and more!
Attend Craft Fairs & Visit Independent Businesses
Even if you’re not purchasing anything, or can only spend a small amount of money, small business owners and creatives are so appreciative of any interaction or conversation they receive at craft fairs or in their stores.
Knowing people love their products enough just to stop for a chat even if they can’t spend any money is still uplifting and meaningful. You could even pick up a business card or two, and share one with a friend. Which leads me on to my next point…
Talk about Small Businesses!
Share recommendations with your friends, shop small on birthdays or for Christmas and tell the recipient who/where you bought from, share small businesses’ posts on your social media, etc.
Word of mouth is vital for small businesses and creatives to get their work out there when other methods seem to be against them. And, if you can, remember to leave good reviews when you do shop small, so other customers can know and trust them.
Support Small & Local Businesses as much and as often as you can, in any way you can!
