Albums for Autumn

Albums for Autumn

If you know me, you’ll know that Autumn is (in theory) one of my favourite times of the year, purely for the aesthetic of it all. Now, I say “in theory” because in reality, the darkness of the early evenings and the greyness of the days can make it quite difficult to truly love the season, but based on cosy aesthetic alone, and not to mention Halloween, I really do love it.

One thing I love most about Autumn is making a cosy, autumnal playlist to listen to, and so I thought I’d share my favourite albums for Autumn!

I’d love to know what your favourite autumn album or song is, so let me know in the comments or over on my Instagram.

MOSS – Maya Hawke
It took me all of three seconds of the first track to know this was going to be THE album of Autumn for me this year, and I was so right! I’ve had this album on repeat all day, and I just can’t get enough of it. Releasing this on the first day of Autumn was probably the best idea – it really got me in the Autumn spirit.
Maya Hawke is an absolutely stunning artist, and this album is just perfect for a cosy or rainy autumnal day – whether you’re walking through the woods among all the changing autumn leaves, or if you’re cosied up indoors with a blanket and a cup of tea.
Not only is it one of my favourite albums for the season, but it might just be one of my favourites of all time!

Favourite Track: Over

folklore – Taylor Swift
Some would argue that Folklore is a Spring/Summer album, and you may be right, but the lyric “August slipped away like a moment in time” really puts this album in a Summer/Autumn transition for me, as August really does slip away as Autumn takes over.
This is easily one of my favourite albums of all time, and it’s one I have on repeat all year round, but it definitely hits different in the Autumn!

Favourite Track: mirrorball

For Emma, Forever Ago – Bon Iver
I think any Bon Iver song is probably great for Autumn, something about his work just places me so deeply in an Autumn mood, I just love it.
This album in particular sticks out to me, so it’s always one I have playing through October & November, and some of it year-round.

Favourite Track: re:stacks

(self-titled) – Marcus Mumford
I have always loved Mumford & Son’s work, and I loved hearing Marcus Mumford’s backing vocals on Taylor Swift’s ‘Cowboy Like Me’ from Evermore, so when I heard he was releasing a solo album, I was over the moon!
The album itself is about a pretty sensitive topic, so when you really listen to the lyrics and know the story behind them, it can be quite hard-hitting, but overall the album is just beautiful, and it’s one I know I’ll listen to throughout Autumn.
The collaborations on this album are stunning too! We’re given tracks with Phoebe Bridgers, Clairo, Monica Martin, and Brandi Carlile, and they’re all just beautiful additions to the album.

Favourite Track: How feat. Brandi Carlile

Red (Taylor’s Version) – Taylor Swift
To me, ‘Red’ has always been my Autumn essential in terms of music. I was beyond happy when the original album was re-recorded, gifting us ‘All Too Well (Ten Minute Version)’, ‘Nothing New’ with Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor’s Version of ‘Babe’ and ‘Better Man’. These extra tracks have absolutely solidified this album as one of my favorites of all time, and my absolute essential for Autumn.
Listening to this album, wearing my ‘Red’ cardigan, and going on a woodland walk in my boots and scarf, with a maple hot chocolate is just the ultimate Autumn vibe.

Favourite Track: All Too Well (Ten Minute Version)

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Soundtrack
Okay… hear me out. ‘New Moon’ is such an Autumn movie, and this soundtrack has some incredible Autumnal songs. The movie is a vibe, the soundtrack is a vibe, need I say more?

Favourite Track: Roslyn – Bon Iver & St. Vincent

Punisher – Phoebe Bridgers
Like Bon Iver, I think Phoebe Bridgers’ albums are just very Autumnal, but Punisher is my favourite to listen to for the season. I absolutely adore Phoebe’s voice and her lyricism, there are just so many good songs on this album, and they slot in so nicely in my Autumnal playlist.

Favourite Track: I Know The End

evermore – Taylor Swift
Yes, you read that right, there are three Taylor Swift mentions on this list, but with good reason! As ‘folklore’ is generally considered the Spring/Summer album of the two, I thought it was only right to add the actual Autumn/Winter album, evermore.
This album definitely feels a bit more Wintery to me with the sleigh bells featuring in a couple of the tracks, but there is undeniably an Autumnal aesthetic and sound to the album too, so it deserves its place in this post and in my Autumn playlist!

Favourite Track: tolerate it

At the Moonbase – Slaughter Beach, Dog
I am so glad I discovered this band through someone else’s playlist, as I have very quickly fallen in love with them!
This album has such a cosy and nostalgic feel, and I could easily picture an Autumnal montage with one of their songs playing over it. A few of the tracks are a little more upbeat than I would usually put in an Autumnal playlist, but honestly, the season can get a little gloomy so it’s nice to have something more uplifting in there too!
Honorable mention to their album “Birdie” too – although it’s not one of my picks for Autumn, I absolutely love it. ‘Acolyte’ is my favourite track, and was the first song of theirs I ever heard!

Favourite Track: My Girl

Hozier – Hozier
When I say that I need a new Hozier album immediately, I mean it! I love his debut album so much, and it is perfect for the Autumn season. I feel like Hozier is considered to be an almost mythological forest-dwelling creature, emerging only in the Autumn every few years, and honestly, I’d believe it.
This was probably the hardest album for me to choose a favourite track from – there are some strong contenders, and I have so many of them in my Autumn playlist it was so hard to just pick one, so, I’m going to cheat.

Favourite Track(s): It Will Come Back, Cherry Wine

So, that’s it! There’s my Top Ten Albums for Autumn. I’ve made a Spotify playlist which you can listen to, which has each of my favourite tracks from the album, plus some extras not mentioned in this post, check it out if you like!
